چکیده

The Canterbury Region of New Zealand has undergone rapid and significant land use intensification over the last three decades resulting in a substantial increase nitrate-nitrogen leached to environment. In this article, we determined nitrate grey water footprint milk, which is amount needed dilute nitrogen past root zone meet different receiving standards per milk production unit. Our analysis revealed for ranged from 433 11,110 litres litre depending on applied. This higher than many estimates global production, reveals that footprints are very dependent inputs included analyses quality applied water. extensive dairy farming leading pollution region’s groundwater, much used drinking Dairy at intensity unsustainable if not reduced could pose risk human health market perception sustainability industry its products.

Variation in carbon footprint of milk due to management differences between Swedish dairy farms.

To identify mitigation options to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from milk production (i.e. the carbon footprint (CF) of milk), this study examined the variation in GHG emissions among dairy farms using data from previous CF studies on Swedish milk. Variations between farms in these production data, which were found to have a strong influence on milk CF, were obtained from existing datab...

Groundwater Recharge Interface and Nitrate Discharge: Central Canterbury, New Zealand

Regional surveys of groundwater quality in Central Canterbury, from 1977 to the present, show widespread occurrence of nitrate contamination primarily from agricultural land use. Two reported analyses of these surveys, in 1984 and 2002, describe a general decrease of nitrate concentration with depth from the groundwater table to uncontaminated water at about 50-80 m. This high quality water is ...

Assessing the Sulfide Footprint of Mussel Farms with Sediment Profile Imagery: A New Zealand Trial

Growing numbers and increased stocking of marine mussel farms make reliable techniques for environmental effect assessment a priority. Previously, we showed how the color intensity of soft sediment could be used to estimate its acid volatile sulfide (AVS) content, a product of the anaerobic microbial degradation of organic matter deposits. We then proposed to include assessments of the AVS farm...
